Weather: temperature drop and gusty north winds today – When are showers expected

-11°C recorded in Parnassos: EMY's weather forecast through Thursday

Newsroom November 3 10:26

A shift in the weather is on the way! Over the next few days, we can finally say goodbye to the ongoing drought, as rain is forecasted to grace our lands for five days, from November 8th to 13th, according to meteorologist Sakis Arnaoutoglou.

Today, the winds from the north will strengthen, with very strong gusts expected in the Aegean Sea throughout the week. Along with these winds, temperatures are set to drop. Although the drought will continue for now, meteorologist Panagiotis Giannopoulos suggests we might see a few isolated showers here and there.

Forecaster Theophanis Hadjigirivas adds that we can expect a notable change in weather today, especially in the eastern mainland. Rain will begin affecting central Macedonia, Thessaly, and other areas after noon. This spell of bad weather will persist until Monday, with the drought possibly breaking around November 12th. However, there are no signs of a significant cold snap on the horizon.

Chilly Temperatures Recorded

Yesterday saw some notably low temperatures across the country. In Parnassos, the mercury plummeted to a chilling -11°C! The coldest recorded temperature of the morning was in Fort Nefrokopi, which dipped to -2.9°C. The National Observatory of Athens’ network of automatic weather stations documented the eight lowest minimum temperatures, showcasing the biting cold we’ve experienced recently.

Today’s Weather Outlook

For today, expect a mix of clouds, becoming partly cloudy in the east and south. There will be local rain showers in areas like Thessaly, Sporades, Evia, and parts of central Greece and the mountains of the Peloponnese and Crete. Be aware that visibility may be limited this evening and early morning, especially in continental regions.

Temperature Ranges

  • Northern Greece: 6°C to 19°C (Western Macedonia: 3°C to 16°C)
  • Central and Southern Greece: 10°C to 21°C
  • Western Greece: 10°C to 26°C (Epirus: 8°C to 21°C)
  • Cyclades and Crete: 13°C to 22°C
  • East Aegean Islands: 10°C to 22°C
  • Dodecanese: 15°C to 23°C

Winds

Winds will blow from the north in the Aegean Sea at moderate to strong levels (5-6 Beaufort), with gusts reaching up to 7 Beaufort in some southeastern areas. In the Ionian Sea, expect lighter winds ranging from 3-4 Beaufort.

Regional Weather Highlights

Macedonia & Thrace: Winds from the north (4-6 Beaufort), temperatures ranging from 8°C to 19°C.

Ionian Islands & Western Greece: Easterly winds (3-5 Beaufort), temperatures between 10°C to 25°C.

Cyclades & Crete: Clear skies with some clouds developing later; expect temperatures from 14°C to 23°C.

Thessaly: A mostly clear day with clouds increasing, bringing local rain.

Attica: Clear with a few clouds, temperatures from 12°C to 23°C.

Looking Ahead

Tomorrow (November 4th), expect partly cloudy skies with a few localized showers across various regions, especially in Macedonia, Thessaly, and the Cyclades. Winds will shift, blowing from the east at moderate levels, and temperatures will continue to be slightly below normal for this time of year.

As we move into November 5th and beyond, anticipate similar weather patterns with a slight chance of rain in certain areas. Keep an eye on the forecast as we transition into this wetter period, and don’t forget to bundle up as temperatures dip!
