With the 62-year-old woman still fighting for her life at Tzaneio due to a mistake in a blood transfusion by a nurse, a similar story has come to light in recent hours from Rethymno. Specifically, the family of a 45-year-old woman complained that when she was admitted to the city’s hospital for an operation in September 2024, she was given blood of a different type from her own, an event for which… was informed 20 days later!
The family’s lawyer spoke to Open on Saturday about the woman’s adventure, saying among other things that: “The incident took place at the hospital in Rethymnon, when my client was admitted on September 29 with severe abdominal pains. The treatment of the incident was completely sloppy. She was discharged without an ultrasound of the stomach, with the result that she had the ultrasound the day after next day in an outside room and was found to have a perforated stomach and fluids had spilled all over the stomach. He was rushed to the surgery of the hospital of Rethymno, so that the operation could be performed. The operation is being performed, which is described as a complete success according to the director. Suddenly, a few hours later the woman starts showing signs of sepsis in her body.”
“They went to bury the incident.”
The lawyer continued: “She was admitted directly to intensive care with almost all her functions turned off at 80%. A very long battle was fought by the director of the ICU to save her. The chances of her living, as the relatives were informed after the 25 days she was in the ICU, were around 20%. The family was informed of the reason for all this when he was discharged from the ICU. They were told that during the surgery, for some reason, instead of transfusing blood group 0 positive that the patient had, she was transfused A positive. They tried to bury this particular incident. By the director of the hospital, as well as by the director of surgery himself, who performed the surgery. No attempt has been made to tell us what has been done in the ED. We are still waiting. Not even an apology. We will be forced to file a lawsuit against the director of surgery and unidentified people, from the nursing staff, to finally find out who is responsible.”.
“The woman has felt disrespected by the hospital itself. Nine months later, we are at absolute zero,” the lawyer added.
