The General Confederation of Greek Workers (GSEE) has announced the decisions of its Executive Committee regarding actions and initiatives in response to the Tempi tragedy. The Confederation made it clear that it will participate in and call for a strike, urging workers across the country to gather at the locations, date, and time designated by the association of the victims’ families.

Specifically, GSEE stated the following:

“No so-called political spin doctor will tell us what to do or how to do it.

  • We will not fall in line behind anyone attempting to downplay or manipulate the spontaneous movement of hundreds of thousands of citizens who responded to the call of the victims’ families under the slogan ‘I CAN’T BREATHE’.
  • We stand firmly against those trying to build arguments and professional demands on the backs of the unjustly lost souls of the Tempi tragedy.
  • We are unconditionally, without grandstanding or ulterior motives, standing with the people who are taking to the streets and demanding:

That the truth about the tragedy be fully revealed—NO FALSE EQUIVALENCES, NO COVER-UPS.

That those responsible for the tragedy be exposed and held accountable, no matter how high up they may be.

That decisions be made and necessary actions taken to ensure the safety of all transportation systems (road, rail, and more), so that the country and society do not mourn more victims, and so that citizens can feel and truly be safe.

“During our strike action, whenever it takes place, we ask our colleagues in public transportation to work—even if they are on strike themselves—to facilitate citizens in attending,” GSEE added.
